Distance

a poetry reading

On a lazy Sunday morning, I decided to recite something out loud, to remind myself that my thoughts are not simply noise reverberating inside my head. I happened to land on this poem in my notebook, as if fate asked me to.

Distance has always been a constant.
No matter what place I go, the company I keep, or the ideas I espouse

Distance has always haunted my relationships - friends, family, love interests.
Distance has isolated me ever so much that I am now far apart from myself.
Slowly yet steadily, a chasm has now appeared between me, and what once was, my entire world - my interests, passions, aspirations and dreams.

Yet, distance has also taught me my biggest lessons -
How to love, how to forgive, how to appreciate the tiniest silver linings,
and how to seek happiness even within the deepest crevices of hell.

Distance taught me to think in my own head in the third person,
wearing the shoes of myself and another at the same time.
Distance has been my oldest companion and foe - but I have to admit,
Distance has probably brought the best out of me.
